Sly Stone is the Catcher in the Rye

God how I wish I'd seen this, just for the hair:

Reclusive Sly Stone steps out at Grammys
(by JAKE COYLE, Associated Press)

Sly Stone, the J.D. Salinger of funk, was drawn out of seclusion by a Grammys tribute.
Wednesday night in Los Angeles, the reclusive pioneer of a hugely influential soul-rock-funk fusion made his first major public appearance since Jan. 12, 1993, when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Sporting a giant blond Mohawk, dark shades and a silver, purple-lined robe, Stone took the stage after a five-song medley tribute that included John Legend, Joss Stone, Maroon 5, Will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.

Now let me say this: JD Salinger was so reclusive that there were no photos of him any later than the mid-fifties and no-one knew what he looked like anymore, until a journalist/stalker landed some groundbreaking photos of him doing groceries.

Are they suggesting that people couldn't pick Sly Stone out of a crowd of people? The man has a blonde mohawk, people. I'm fairly sure he was accessible, you just weren't trying hard enough...

Strangely enough, the E! channel did an hour's show on exactly that: reclusive celebrities. It was incredibly stupid, since most of them weren't so much reclusive as drug addicts or alcoholics and living under bridges.

As far as I know, the most famous celeb living under a bridge was Anthony Kiedis, him out of the Chilli Peppers. He turned his bridge dwelling time into a hit song - this was in turn was covered by All Saints, who have spent no time
whatsoever under bridges. And how reclusive do you have to be before you actually become more famous for being reclusive than for anything you did before. Examples,
JD Salinger, Syd Barrett and Phil Spector - though Phil Spector is now more famous for having huge hair and not shooting people who he shot.

And Peter Criss of KISS did not live under a bridge, despite claims that he did. From Wikipedia:

"In 1989, a Star article claimed that the drummer was a homeless alcoholic. The man who had claimed to be Peter was Christopher Dickinson, who was discovered living under a bridge by Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold. Criss and Dickinson later got into their first interview on The Phil Donahue Show in 1991."

He was, however, a bit of a druggie and/or alcoholic, and was sacked then reunited with KISS on a world tour. Before being sacked again. Same with Ace Frehley, though I don't think he lived under a bridge. Both were subsequently re-kicked out of KISS and sent back to their respective non-bridges.

Keith

Peter Criss of Kiss. That is genius. All bands should have drummers
whose names rhyme with the band. Craig Renesis of
Genesis. Or Jeff Peppard of Def Leppard. Bud Rayne of
Mudvayne.

Or Karl Marx from Sparks.
